✓ Pulmonary disease in polymyositis/dermatomyositis: a clinicopatho- logical analysis of 65 autopsy cases. Ann Rheum Dis 46:23-29, 1987 Interstitial lung disease was noted at autopsy in 27 patients; almost half of these had arthritis(v.s. 24% of the remaining 38 cases). Bronchopneumonia was found in 35 patients, 31 of these had received prednisolone. Pulmonary vasculitis was seen in five patients and all five had associated interstitial lung disease.

An initial infection with the AIDS retrovirus can be associated with polymyositis, which may be the first clinical manifestation of an impending AIDS-related complex or AIDS. JAMA 256:2381-2383, 1986.

Previous muscle damage and bacteremia, usually 'silent', appear to be prerequisitis for the development of pyomyositis. Richard Schwab reported the first case of Klebsiella pyomyositis in the United states. Am J Med 81:1116-1117, Dec. 1986.

✓ Of the nine patients with inflammatory muscle disease, five were positive for Coxsackie-B-virus RNA; no viral sequences were found in the ten Duchene muscular dystrophy and control biopsy samples. Lancet 1987, May 2, 1:1004-1007.

✓ Improved detection of anti-Jo-l antibody, a marker for myositis, using purified histidyl-tRNA synthetase. J Immunol Methods 96:149- 156, 1987. Using purified antigen, anti-Jo-l antibody was detected in the sera of 16/33(48.5%) patients with confirmed myositis and in 20/45(44.5%) patients with confirmed or possible myositis.

Precipitating anti-PM-Scl antibodies are present in sera from patients with PM/Scl. overlap syndromes. By indirect immunofluorescence microscopy, anti-Pm-Scl Ab stained the nucleolus in cells of different tissues and species, suggesting that the Ag is highly conserved. By electron microscopy, anti-Pm- Scl Ab reacted primarily with the granular component of the nucleolus. Drugs that inhibit rRNA synthesis had a marked effect on the expression of PM-Scl antigen. Patients with active untreated disease had low baseline NK activity. J Rheumatology 14:307-309, 1987.

Using the myoglobin assay no additional information could be obtained since myoglobin and creatine kinase levels correlated equally well with muscle strength and function. Ann Rheum Dis 46:173-175, 1987.
